Places

Rooms, shelves and boxes, and why a box is different from a shelf.

Locations is where you describe where things are kept. "Places" and "locations" mean the same thing.

You rarely need this page

Places are made as you stash things: type "garage > rack > box 3" into Where is it? and whatever doesn't exist yet appears. This page is for looking at the whole tree, and for tidying it — renaming, moving, aliases.

Places nest

Start with rooms, then put shelves, drawers and boxes inside them. Everywhere in the app a place is written as its full path — "Garage > Rack > Shelf 3" — so two boxes called "Box 3" in different rooms are never confused.

Places and containers

Every location is one of two kinds:

place
Somewhere that stays put: a room, a shelf, a cupboard.
container
Something that moves: a box, a crate, a bag. Moving it moves everything inside it, because the things are in the box, not on the shelf.

When a place is created for you (from a photo, or by the Rummager) the kind is guessed from the name — "box" is a container, "shelf" is a place. If it guessed wrong, change it on the place's own page, next to its path.

A place's own page

Stored here
Things kept directly in this place.
Somewhere inside
Things in places inside this one, with where exactly.
Inside
The places directly inside this one.
Also called
Aliases: other names that should find it. Add "attic" to "Loft" and both words work, for the Rummager as well as for you.
Move
Puts this place, and everything in it, inside somewhere else.

Deleting a place

A place can only be deleted once it's empty — no things and no places inside it. Move them out first. That's so a delete can always be undone cleanly.
