Capture

Jot it down now, sort it out later — words, voice notes and photos.

Capturing is for when you haven't got time to do it properly: jot it down now, and turn it into stashes later. A capture is never acted on by itself; it waits in the Inbox.

Three ways to capture

The Capture page
Capture is a plain text box that works with no signal. Type, press Capture, walk away. It keeps what you typed on the phone and sends it when you're back in range. Add it to your home screen ("Add to Home Screen" in the share menu) and it opens like an app. It takes text only.
The Inbox
The box at the top of the Inbox takes text and one file: a voice note or a photo of a box, up to 40MB. It needs a connection.
A shortcut on your phone
"Hey Siri, Stash" can send a sentence or a recording straight in. The setup is in the Inbox, under Capturing from a phone, and needs an API token — see Tokens, MCP and shortcuts.

What happens next

  • Words wait in the Inbox for you, or the Rummager, to act on.
  • A voice note is turned into text in the background, if the server is set up for it. Until then it says "Voice note (not transcribed yet)".
  • A photo is looked at in the background, if the server is set up for it, and what's in it comes back as a list to tick. Until then it says "Photo (not described yet)".

Photos are shrunk and stripped of their hidden details — including the GPS position a phone records — before they're stored.
