Inbox

Where captures wait until they become changes.

The Inbox holds captures — things said, recorded or photographed — until somebody turns them into changes. Nothing in it is ever thrown away by itself, even if nobody can make sense of it.

Dealing with a capture

Let the Rummager try
Hands the words to the assistant, which does what they say. If it needs to ask a question instead, the capture stays where it is — a question isn't an answer. Not offered for a photo or an untranscribed voice note, because there are no words yet.
Have a look at this
For a photo: asks the AI what's in it. Usually this has already happened in the background by the time you look, so it's for a second go.

"Reading the photo…" and "Transcribing…"

A photo or a voice note is read in the background as soon as it arrives, and while that is happening its card says so, with a spinner. It usually takes a few seconds; the suggestions or the words then appear on the card by themselves. You don't need to wait on the page — leave and come back. Home shows the same thing on its inbox card ("1 still being read").

Have a look at this is hidden while a photo is being read, so the same photo isn't read twice. If it ever spins for more than about a quarter of an hour, something has gone wrong: the spinner gives up and the button comes back.

Dismiss
Takes it out of the queue. Use it once you've dealt with it by hand, or if it wasn't worth keeping.

Photos of boxes

A photo comes back as What might be in the photo: a list of things, each with a tick box. Nothing is stashed until you press Stash the ticked ones, because a model looking at a cluttered shelf will sometimes name things that aren't there. The ones it's confident about start ticked; the rest don't.

It reads writing — labels, part numbers, the printing on a bag — so a photo where the labels are legible does much better than one where they aren't. Something with no writing on it is described as such ("unlabelled black cable").

Put them in picks an existing place. …or somewhere new takes a path like "garage > rack > shelf 3" or "shelf 3 in the garage" and shows the chain before creating anything: grey for places that already exist, highlighted for new ones, and or for whether each is a container or a place. If two places have the same name it treats yours as new rather than guessing which you meant.

Stashing a photo's worth is one change, so one undo takes it all back.

The warning triangle

Some captures are flagged as possibly containing something you'd rather not keep — a password, or someone else's details. It's a nudge, nothing more: nothing has been changed or hidden, and "the wifi password is on the router" is a perfectly good thing to stash.
